Professional Dental Hygiene

by Dott. Federico Fontana

It is a preventive procedure that consists of the removal of bacterial plaque and tartar, both on the surface of the teeth and inside the gum folds.

After an initial examination, to assess the state of the oral cavity, the hygienist proceeds with cleaning using manual and mechanical tools. The latter are equipped with a metal tip that vibrates at a high frequency, while producing a flow of water that is intended to flush away the removed tartar.

If particularly deep gingival furrows (periodontal pockets) have formed, the roots are also smoothened using hand tools.

At the end of the session, the tooth surfaces are polished with a special paste, which can remove any surface pigmentation and make the tooth walls smoother, thus warding off new bacterial plaque and prolonging the duration of the hygiene effect.

The frequency with which hygiene should be performed varies from patient to patient and depends on several factors. The best intervals to be maintained between sessions are evaluated by the dentist or dental hygienist each time.
